The 2nd April 2021 marked start of the 14th annual World Autism Awareness Week. Chaps & Co joined in with the international community, landmarks, buildings and homes across the globe ‘lighting it up blue’. A gesture in recognition, in raising awareness and in showing support for autistic people around the world.

Autism is a spectrum disorder, sometimes referred to as ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). This is due to the wide range of types of autism, but also the severity by which any one such individual is affected. For some, this could pass by undetected throughout a lifetime. For others it can be debilitating in all aspects of their life from communications and interactions to behaviours, interests and sensory perceptions.

With such a wide and varied range of symptoms, autism can often be overlooked in day-to-day lives of those struggling with the disorder. For that reason, World Autism Awareness Week is paramount to helping those with no experience of the disorder to understand, recognise and account for the symptoms which affect autistic people.

Dubai Autism Centre

Throughout the month of April, Dubai Autism Centre arranges autism-friendly events and educational activities for all. The aim is to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism, fostering worldwide support and inspiring a kinder, more inclusive world.

The Dubai Autism Centre invited Chaps & Co to the first of a series of events, to spread kindness and autism awareness. Proudly, we had barbers lining up to take part and give back to our local community.

Once agreed on date and time, (shortly after World Autism Awareness Week) our staff were required to attend a training and assessment on how to handle autistic children. They of course passed with flying colours.

Our visit was scheduled for the week following the half term break on 10th & 11th April. We arranged our barber chairs to be delivered to the site with two fully equipped and trained barbers for the two days. We had 36 children scheduled all between the ages of 3 and 16.

Aside from a few overly cautious, the children enjoyed the experience and novelty of our team visit. Delivering haircuts and in return receiving an abundance of smiles.

It was an absolute pleasure working with DTA and their children. We can’t wait to be invited back again soon.
