We might be 6,485km from Munich, but we’re also a city known for its multicultural celebrations. So, pull up your socks, it’s time for Oktoberfest NYC.

Originating in Germany, this festival combines carnivals, beer, wine, food and good times. With a long history dating back to the early 1800s, it has grown to be recognised as the world’s largest beer festival. Since 1994, it has also been a celebration of the unification of Germany and is celebrated all over the world.

Bringing Oktoberfest to NYC

The official home of Oktoberfest in NYC is Watermark, an open-air venue located at Pier 15 in South Street, NYC. Here you can find nearly two months of celebrations which run from 2nd September until 31st October.

You’ll find everything you’d expect at Munich’s Oktoberfest with lederhosen and steins as far as the eye can see. The venue offers some spectacular view of the Brooklyn skyline as well as the Williamsburg and Brooklyn Bridge.

Oktoberfest in NYC – Beers, Bratwurst and Beards

With gallons and gallons of the finest German and Bavarian beers available in litre and half litre steins, a range of traditional bratwursts, giant pretzels, music, fun and games on offer, it’s a great opportunity to experience some authentic German culture on your own doorstep.

Getting in the Spirit

If, like us, you do things properly, you’ll probably want to get yourself some authentic German face furniture, so you fit in. The Oktoberfest Bavarian moustache and beard combo is a show stopping, soup straining, curly delight and will compliment your lederhosen perfectly.

But what is a Bavarian Moustache?

You take the basic handlebar moustache, and with a little wax, pomade or other holding product, twizzle the ends and curl them up. The bigger and thicker the moustache, the better the outcome. Think Wild-West Sheriff and you’re halfway there.

Add a beard, styled in similar fashion, with upturns and hela-volume and you’re really starting to look the part.

Your attire should consist of a checked shirt, some lederhosen (made of chamois or deer leather, if you’re a purist) and a Tyrolean hat. Add all this together and you’re just missing a stein of beer, which you’ll find down at Watermark.

If you fancy going the whole-hog and need a little help styling or perfecting that moustache, pop down to Chaps & Co. where our professional beard barbers will happily help. If you need to book in with the best barbers in NYC, you can follow this link, or to see our services you can click here.
