There are many professional athletes and sportspeople we admire and celebrate, but it takes a special sort of person to be looked up to as a true role model. We’ve had a think and come up with some names we’re sure you’ll agree with.

Marcus Rashford

Rashford’s performance on the pitch has always gained him positive attention, both for England and United, but his actions off the pitch are even more inspiring.

His commitment to the British working class and the poorest in the country did not go unnoticed as he went head-to-head with the government and demanded food vouchers provided to the poorest households were not scrapped. He was also spotted at his local food bank volunteering with his mum and is a great example of how to rock a skin fade (we couldn’t help but mention it).

Roger Federer

Held in high esteem by tennis fans for his prowess on the court, Roger’s 16 Grand Slam titles mean he’ll always be a hero in the tennis world. However, his work away from sport should also be held in high esteem.

Roger became a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF in 2006 and has worked with many charities since then. He helped the victims of both the 2010 Haitian Earthquake and Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Mo Farah

Four-time Olympic gold medallist and icon Mo Farah triumphed against adversity to become one of the best-loved athletes of all time. As one of the most successful British track athletes, Mo’s story is well-known by millions and his experiences prior to becoming an athlete make it even more inspiring.

Born in Somalia and illegally trafficked to the UK as a young child, Mo lived away from his family and initially as a domestic servant before his school helped and put him on the pathway towards Olympic success.

Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton remains the only black Formula 1 driver and holds an unbeaten record of seven world championships. He’s received a knighthood for his work, and he has always stood out as a role model for his outspoken commitment to anti-racism across sport and in society. He set up the Hamilton Commission to explore black underrepresentation and Mission 44 to support and empower young people from underrepresented groups.

A fantastic role model for all, Lewis’ amazing feats on the track were not easy to achieve, as his race, attitude and even tattoos meant he stood out in the sport. He has used this to his advantage throughout his career, not afraid to be different and he’s also a pro at showing how to care for afro hair.

Simone Biles

The ladies of Chaps & Co would not be impressed if this list was completed without a single woman so we’ve opted for Simone Biles, a powerhouse of an athlete and so much more.

Simone Biles is the most decorated gymnast in history and has seven Olympic medals and many more from world championships and other competitions. Her childhood in and out of foster care did not stop her from reaching every success yet she still remains grounded, taking time out of her sport for her mental wellbeing and showing others the importance of looking after their mental health.
