This is one of the questions we get asked most as barbers. How often should I shampoo my hair? The short and curly’s of it are, it depends on your hair type but also on the climate.

The quick answer is two or three times a week but considering the variables might give us another result. After all, we are all different. Straight thin hair and thick curly hair will require different routines, the trick is to work out what is best for you. So, let’s take a look at the basics.

Oil be Back

One reason scientists and hair professionals don’t recommend shampooing every day is because your body naturally produces oils to protect your hair. Water presents no danger to these oils, so washing and exfoliating the scalp daily is good practice.

Shampoo, on the other hand, strips back the oils so daily use is not recommended. The results of over-shampooing and stripping your hair of its protective layer is structural damage, which can leave hair weak, flat and tired looking.

Plenty of Product?

There is one situation where shampooing daily is seen as beneficial, and that’s if you use a lot of product in your hair. When using gels, pastes, powders or any other number of hair styling products, your pores can become blocked.

Blocked pores are never good. They can result in pimples, boils and cysts (sorry) as well as stopping your hairs essential oils coming through.

If you just use a little bit of product each day, just rinsing with water should suffice. If you use a lot, be sure to shampoo it all out so you don’t fall foul at the follicle.

Categories and Climates

So, the deciding factors for how often you should shampoo your hair now boil down to the type of hair you have, and the time of year. As we mentioned, the climate can dictate the frequency of your shampooing.

Hot climates mean we perspire more. With perspiration come toxins from the skin and these need to be washed out. During summer months you may choose to shampoo after long days in the heat to tackle the toxins.

At the other end of the scale, the colder months will dry your hair out. During these months you should look to use a hydrating shampoo to keep life in your locks.

How Often Should I be Shampooing my Hair?

The final consideration is the type of hair you have. Straight, fine hair is much less susceptible to the effects of shampoo. If you have straight, fine hair, shampooing daily might not even present an issue. For the curly tops amongst us, however, it’s recommended to only shampoo twice a week.

If you remain unsure about the best frequency for shampooing, why not speak to one of our expert barbers. We’re always happy to help.
