CHAPS BEARD TRIMS AND BEARD CARD

If you have facial hair, grooming is a necessity, not a luxury. Your face is a big part of the first impression you make when meeting people and an unkempt beard is a big giveaway that you were not prepared for the day. If you wouldn’t leave the house without combing your hair on your head, think of your beard as the facial equivalent.

We’re often asked, how long should you let your beard grow before trimming it? Trimming should be part of a weekly or bi-weekly routine, although it falls to personal preference. Remember, your beard hair will become damaged at the ends, just like the hair on your head, so a bit of maintenance never goes a miss.

Also, like hair care, beard grooming doesn’t just benefit the hair involved. It also improves the condition of the skin beneath. Dry, flaky skin can quickly turn itchy but a regular routine maintained using the right products can eliminate this problem completely by removing both dead skin and the build up of residue from naturally produced hair oils.

So how do you come up with a routine that suits you? Well, that really depends on 2 things; the style of your beard and the amount of time you’re willing to invest in it.

Beard Grooming Tips

Certain steps are essential regardless of these 2 factors. Daily (at least) brushing or combing is a must, both for hygiene and aesthetic reasons. Oiling should be done twice a day, morning and evening, with a little more being used overnight, when it has chance to be absorbed with little disturbance. Shampooing, we would recommend every 3-4 days, so as not to strip your hair of the natural oils that keep it drying out.

These are all relatively small steps, and the daily styling of your beard should take no more than 20 minutes even if you have a full-blown Ned Kelly.

If your beard hair is longer or more unruly, you may need a little extra help keeping it in check. A beard balm or wax will help more with styling while still conditioning your beard. Balm will help more with generalised shaping, while the thicker, stickier waxes can be used to achieve more specific styles and shapes, such as tapering, curled ends.

Beard Grooming Tips

Extra steps like beard conditioning treatments can help your beard stay glossy and soft and repair damaged hair as well as hydrating your skin. Used just like a regular hair moisturiser, these are applied to a wet beard, smoothed through, allowed to soak in for 2-5 minutes and rinsed off thoroughly.

When should you trim your beard?

Trimming can be a little trickier than the other steps mentioned here, but for maintaining shape, especially in more defined styles, it should really be done at least twice a week, more if you feel like it’s getting wild. Trimming while dry will ensure you get the length you want and you can wash or brush off any excess when you’re done. If you don’t feel confident that you can achieve what you want yourself, your Chaps stylist will be happy to step in.

So don’t think that beard grooming needs to be a tiresome slog; a little time invested in regular maintenance can keep your daily routine time to a minimum whilst still achieving the look that you want.
