Bad hair days can wait for Wednesday. It’s the weekend, and you need to be packing some panache. Making a statement is going to take some special and a comb, but what do we class as the weekend essentials?

What you use on your hair will very much depend on what type of hair you have.  With many different products on the shelves, it’s important to know what is best for your hair type. Using the wrong product could leave you with a floppy quiff, or even worse, damage your hair’s health.

So what product is for you?

What Hair Product is Suitable for My Hair Type?

Gel

90’s school kids will remember this one all too well, although gel doesn’t generally arrive in fluorescent gloop anymore. Today’s gel is a little more sophisticated, but that said, offers very similar results. Gel gives day long hold, with a wet look finish.

We wouldn’t advise using gel on naturally dry, thick hair as it really doesn’t suit the styles you can produce with such hair.

Clay and Putty

Offering hold throughout the day with a natural, matte finish clay or putty are the perfect companion for any hair type. Working the product into your palm, you can work it from the scalp outwards on target areas of your do.

Moulding and sculpting the desired look, the product should offer a superior hold and leave your hair looking natural.

Styling Powder

Styling powders, also known as mattifying powders or texturizing powders are a finely ground white, tacky powder. Ade using silica silylate, they add volume and texture to your hair. Easy to use, hair powder, in small amounts, leaves your hair with plenty of movement whilst holding still holding it in your preferred style.

For thin hair, hair powder can give the illusion that hair is thicker, whilst with thick curly hair, you only need to tease a little in for the desired results.

Pomade

With pomades, you have oil- and water-based. The oil-based is perfect for dry, thick hair, leaving it with a good amount if its natural hold. They’re great for authentic-look combovers and pompadours.

Your water-based pomade comes with a variety of holds and finishes from loose to firm and matte to wet look.

Wax

If you’re looking for a messy textured look, wax is the way. Suitable for all hair types, like clay and putty, you can work the wax into the areas of your hair that need it. Adding texture to flat or dry hair, the hold relies on the hairs natural structure as well, so if you want to keep the volume all day long, maybe look to something else.

Hairspray

For the finale, hairspray offers varied levels of hold. Medium and maximum hold hairsprays are suitable for all hair types and can maintain definition and style to a tee. They also offer varying finishes up to a high shine and work great with other products.

Remember, Start Small

Whatever products you use, remember to start with a little. It’s always easier to add more than it is to remove too much. You should also try to keep product use to a minimum and make sure you’re keeping to a regular and thorough cleaning routine.
