Remaining in your barber’s good books is always recommended. They are, after all, responsible for keeping your ravaging good looks, ravaging. As with much of society, there are unwritten rules to follow and barbershop etiquette to be observed.

They aren’t written on the wall, taught in schools or signed in an agreement between you and your barber. So, to keep you in those good books, we spoke to a few of our team members to find the top 5 things to avoid doing at the barbers.

Barbershop Etiquette

Unruly Kids

From time to time, people need to bring their children with them to the barbers. We love to see them; children are a delight to be around with their inquisitive nature and meter high views of the world.

Barbershop Etiquette – 4 Ways to Follow

What we need to avoid, is children running loose around the shop. The barbershop is full of sharp implements, it is supposed to be a relaxing environment for our clients. If you need to bring your kids to the shop, it might be best to bring them something to do.

Answering Your Phone

This was the top gripe across the team. You may think it a bizarre thing to do, and we are with you, but it seems some people have the self-awareness of a teaspoon.

Now, it’s not that we don’t want you to answer important calls or keep friends and family updated on your progress, but how you go about that is key.

If you receive a call mid-cut, and you really must take it, just mention to your barber that you need to take the call. Simply answering the phone, as routine as that may be, is quite frankly rude when someone is working in close proximity to you, never mind cutting your hair.

If you need a moment, just keep us informed. We aren’t going to deny you the time.

Hawk Eyes

As the professionals, we know what we’re doing. As the professionals, we can also tell when you’re watching our every move. The creative process of cutting hair requires focus as well as skill and a level of trust, we want you to feel comfortable.

Barbershop Etiquette – 4 Ways to Follow

To truly feel comfortable, your barber needs to feel comfortable. If your eyes are following your barber around the chair and checking every snip, the trust can become broken. You should be invested in the standards and experience of your barber, otherwise, why are you there in the first place?

Must Dash

Last but not least in the book of barbershop etiquette, if you make an hour-long appointment, be sure you have an hour to spare. If you just need a line-up, it shouldn’t take too long and you can be in and out. If you’re in for a haircut, please don’t add the extra pressure of a time limit.

We understand that people are busy, but that is also why we have appointment books with reasonable time frames between clients. The art of barbering is a process, it takes time, skill and creativity. Let’s not rush it.

Now we’ve had a moan, why not let us know if we can do anything to brush up on our service to you. If you have any suggestions to better our business, from a customer’s perspective, we’d love to hear from you. For more information on our barbershops, you can follow this link.
