With the sun shining and people busy and about, our barber’s chairs are as lively as ever, carving our popular haircuts. With any arm of the fashion industry, trends tend to come and go, mostly influenced by culture, music and celebrities; popular haircuts are no different.

This year, we’ve seen a few new styles rise in their popularity, as well as some old flames reignite. Having devised a list of what’s hot and what’s not, we present our favourites so far in 2022.

Popular Haircuts

Short Curls

That just-got-out-of-bed look seems to have overspilled from lockdown with the trend slipping under the radar. This is a simple look for those with naturally curly hair. For those not blessed with the curls, applying some hair mousse to damp hair and blow drying could be the key.

7 Popular Haircuts in 2022

You’ll need short to medium length on top, curled, tidied up and kept short around the back and sides.

Short Spikey Hair

If you were around in the late 80s and early 90s, you undoubtedly remember this old chestnut. Popularised by kids who wanted to be Sonic the Hedgehog, short spikes were a revered look.

Short back and sides, with choppy layers on the top, brushed upwards, with plenty of product to keep that volume and arranged into spikes.

Flat Top

In another call back to 90s computer games, the reference you get for the look is Guile from Capcom’s Street Fighter.

Perhaps though, there is a correlation between these two. The flat top is very similar to the spiked hair. Rather than the choppy layers though, it’s straight cut, then brushed up, cut and styled so its flat and angular at the top.

High Bald Fade

These skin fade haircuts have been increasingly popular since the turn of the century. What we’ve noticed, is they get shorter and higher. In light of that, allow us to introduce the highest and tightest of them all, the high bald fade.

Shaved round the back and sides with a cutthroat razor and all the way up, you can combine this look with all sorts. The length you leave up top can be anything from buzzcut to medium length, sported into combovers, pompadours, quiffs or whatever takes your fancy.

Burst Fade

Another fade style that works with plenty of different cuts is the burst fade. Shorter around the ears, the burst, fades into the top and back of your haircut across the temples. They also look fantastic when incorporated into a beard.

The most popular style we see the burst fade working with, is a mohawk.

Shag

It’s quite possible that this is another style boiling over from the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. The just-got-out-of-bed look but without trimming the sides or back, uses choppy feathered layers of medium to long length. Scruffy, yet effective.

Pro tip – if you have a requirement to smarten up, you can always run a brush through and style the Shag into a Bro-flow.

Bowlcut

Having thought to be all but extinct, it seems somehow the bowlcut has managed to cling on to the washboard! Popularised in the 60s but disappearing somewhere around the 80s along with sleeveless knitted tank tops, the bowlcut is back. Stranger Things have happened!

The look is achieved by cutting the fringe and bangs to the same length all the way around.
