As it is International Women’s Day, we’d like to take a moment to pay homage to all the important women in our lives.

Before we sing their praises, we need to look at why movements such as International Women’s Day are so important in modern society. The issues faced by women spread much further than a pay gap.

Some components of gender equality are so ingrained into society, you may not even recognise them as a contributor. For example, men are three times more likely to interrupt a woman than another man. Gendering of professions, barbers being a prime example, is a small action that has larger ramifications, it is the butterfly effect.

Often these smaller mistakes funnel through to the larger issues of equality. This is not to say that men are purposefully targeting women, although, for clarity, this does happen way more than it should. Changing the way we think, the way we talk and the way we interact all contribute towards a fairer society.

It falls to the constructs of society, especially those of the past that have predetermined women’s position in society. Changing those opinions, the societal imbalances that lie between a man and a woman takes time, but also effort and changes in the way we work.

You only need look to the struggles and challenges faced in combatting racial prejudices to see how difficult the path is to iron such problems out.

Our Lady Barbers

At Chaps & Co, equality and inclusivity has been a part of our ethos since day one. As part of our dedication to this, we introduced the UAE’s first lady barber back in 2017. Then subsequently, the second, third and fourth

Despite being a male grooming business, we proudly have a gender equal balance throughout the Chaps business in the UAE and USA. This spans the office team, front desk, therapists and barbers. We’d like to recognise all the ladies and take this moment to thank them for everything they do.

We currently have 4 lady barbers in the UAE, Bethany, Issy, Mihaela and Ivonna. In NYC, a further 2 lady barbers, Laurie & Eva. Add this to the front desk, office and therapy teams, (sorry, ladies, too many to mention individually) and that’s a whole lot of thanks going out, from the rest of our team.

The Ladies of Chaps & Co

Our Daughters, Mothers and Significant Others

Last but not least, we’d like to put a shout out there to the women who help make our world go round. Not to say that as honourable gentlemen, we don’t work to pave their pathways with rose petals and gold all year round. But to let them know we recognise the struggle they face.

An open channel of communication between the sexes is the start. Viewing each other as people before attributing gender is so important. This is not restricted to the workplace, but also in places of education and communities across the globe.

To see the shift we need to see, we should take care of the smaller elements and the rest will follow.
