As we enter the warmer months of the year, your hair may require a little extra TLC for protection. Prolonged exposure from UVA and UVB rays can damage your hair’s cuticle (outside protective layer). Knowing how to prevent this sort of damage is essential in summer.

The signs that your hair has been damaged are discolouration, brittle and broken strands, split ends as well as frizzy or thinning hair. When darker hair becomes lighter, the sun is damaging your hair, it is becoming dehydrated and has been overexposed.

All these symptoms can leave your hair looking tired and becoming unmanageable.

How to Prevent, Repair and Protect Your Hair from Sun Damage

There are several steps you can take to ensure your hair is protected during the hotter months of the year.

Use a UV filtering product

When choosing hair styling product during summer months, look for products that also offer a level of UV protection. Killing two birds with one stone, you can protect your hair whilst achieving the level of hold your need to style it.

Sunscreen Spray

Using a sunscreen spray on your hair as well as your body is a great way to provide protection. This is especially important if your hair is thinning, as it will provide protection for your scalp as well as your hair. You can massage the spray into your hair and work it into the scalp to ensure complete protection.

Use a hair mask

Much like a face mask rehydrates your skin, a hair mask rehydrates your hair. We recommend replacing your conditioner twice a week with a hair mask. After a rinse, shampoo and rinse, apply the hair mask and leave for two to three minutes then rinse.

Double up on your conditioner

You should be using conditioner as a regular part of your haircare routine. Conditioners replace moisture, vitamins and minerals in your hair. These vital elements are reduced further during spells of hot weather and overexposure to the sun. Doubling up on conditioner, but also reducing shampoo (which can strip away the natural oils) will leave your hair looking and feeling, fresh and healthy.
