Chaps & Co first opened our doors in October 2015. We started with three barbers, Rommel from the Philippines, Ahmed from Syria and Jay from England. Since then, we have continued to recruit from far and wide to build our team.
The first barber to join us directly from the Philippines was Jessan Elegio (Aka Jason around the barbershops) who joined the team on September 24, 2018. Jason began barbering at a young age, following in the footsteps of his mother and grandfather, barbering “it’s in my blood” he proudly says.
Jason travelled from the city of Cebu, via Singapore to finally arrive in Dubai. “I really wanted to develop my talents and thought working internationally in a cosmopolitan city was a must” says Jason
New Beginnings
When Jason arrived in Dubai he moved around the Chaps & Co branches, which is always the case with new arrivals. This helps gain an understanding of the culture, learn from the more established barbers and develop their sequence of service standards the ‘Chaps Way’.
After initial training, Jason was given a full-time chair at Chaps & Co Dubai Design District. Jason says “I had never seen a barbershop or salon quite like Chaps D3, having the opportunity to work there is an experience I will never forget”.
Though it wasn’t all plain sailing, Chaps D3 started off at a relatively slow pace. With the area being a brand-new development, access was anything but convenient.
Over the years though D3 has developed into a design and social hub and the barbershop has grown from strength to strength. It is a testament to the Chaps and Co team that our D3 barbershop is now the busiest in town. Not only do we provide barber service, but we also have two massage rooms and mani-pedi stations at the location.
Award Winning Barber
Jason arrived in Dubai as a very capable barber but has since developed into a world class barber. Arriving from the Philippines meant Jason had not been exposed to a wide variety of hair types nor beards. Along with in-shop development from our long serving barbers, Jason spends his free time surfing the web for tutorials on how to perfect his skills.
“Since entering the industry at 17, I have always loved my job and want to continually develop my skills. I want every customer to leave feeling like nothing can be improved” says Jason, now 35.
The Chaps & Co management quickly identified Jason’s passion and skill development and he was entered into the BBA Battle of the Barber’s at The World Trade Centre, Dubai in 2019. After 4 ‘in-ring’ rounds, Jason was awarded the belt for Barber of the Year, Dubai.
The award boosted Jason’s confidence and he decided to enter the 2020 Hairdresser of the Year competition on his own accord. Yet again and as no surprise to Chaps & Co, Jason was crowned again and took home the top award.
An Epic Challenge
Understandably, Jason’s achievements have gained him a loyal following and he was performing at the pinnacle of his game at D3. However, Jason couldn’t wait to offer his services at the newly opened Chaps & Co at Bloomingdale’s, The Dubai Mall.
“Moving to Bloomingdale’s was a no-brainer for me, this is an epic challenge and one that I am loving already after my first three weeks here. To work inside the world’s biggest mall and collaborate with a brand as big as Bloomingdale’s is a massive step for me in my career. I am laser focused on making this a success and continuing my career with Chaps & Co.”
At Chaps Bloomingdale’s we have four chairs on the barber floor and one Barber Room for exclusive barber services, only available at this shop. We are very excited about the launch of our Barber Room as it will once again elevate the barber experience within the UAE market, under the Chaps & Co brand.
