We are starting the month of March off strong with International Women’s Day. Many people have heard of International Women’s Day, however, do not know much about the background for this celebration. International Women’s Day is a global day that celebrates the social, cultural, political, and economic achievements of women all over the world. It is also a day that is used to create awareness and educate people on women’s rights and how we can globally combat some of the issues our women face in many distinct aspects in life.

Although International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8 March, it was originally celebrated on a different day. The very first International Women’s Day was celebrated on 19 March 1911 in the United States, as well as several European countries. From here on, the United Nations had declared March 8 International Women’s Day in 1975. The idea behind International Women’s Day originally stemmed from the 1908 Labor Movement, where women marched the streets of New York, in protest for voting rights, better working hours and equal pay.

Currently across many industries we can still see a pay gap between male and female employees as well as mistreatment and inequality. This is what many women globally still face, and it is important to note that there are companies that are diligently working to diminish the gaps and improve women’s spaces, however there are still companies within different industries that have not yet adapted to the changing times.

Now we have recently had an increase of female CEO’s being celebrated across many brands, however, people still gravitate towards trusting a brand or company with a male in the leading seat. There are still many brands and companies that prefer to have a male as a leading role for people to trust, but in time this is changing and if companies continue to work on their outlook on these issues this is surely something that could be changed to help empower women.

International Women's Day

The best way forward for companies to improve female spaces is to first analyze what are the targeted issues that the women in their business are facing. This could be different issues depending on the industry, however that best way is to speak to the female employees and see where there is room for improvement. Once this has been done companies can then strategize on how they can combat these issues, create a more comfortable environment, and allow respect throughout the entire company flow. You could schedule informative team talks and seminars to help educate employees on the topic, as well as encourage change within your organization.

Similarly in barbering, women often face issues of criticism. Often female barbers are looked at differently to male barbers. However, there are many amazing female barbers that perform at the highest level in the industry and this amount is growing. It’s important to note that there is still a large perception that female barbers are not as good as male barbers, but this perception is slowly changing over time as more and more female barbers are showing off their amazing skills and progressing in the industry. We ourselves at Chaps have top-class female barbers that have excelled in barbering and are extremely excited for the females in our business to continue to make a name for themselves and show the world what they have to offer.

We have asked some of our female barbers what message do they have for women considering a career in barbering? These were their responses:

Issy: Get ready to stand out – most people would think being a female in a male dominated industry would be a disadvantage, but in fact you can use it as an advantage. You can change the industry’s perception by bringing female empowerment and giving men something to think about when choosing a female barber. By focusing on perfecting your skillset, you can break away from the mold and gain a respected reputation within the industry.

Nina: To women that are wanting to start a career in barbering I think they should embrace their ability to be flexible. Some people feel more comfortable getting a haircut from a barber of the same gender, especially if they are looking for a shorter haircut or a more masculine style, however female barbers are also skilled at cutting all types of hair, so they can be a great option for anyone. Use this to your advantage to grow in the field.

Bethany: To all females that would looking into barbering, embrace your passion and skills confidently. Gender doesn’t define your abilities. Don’t be afraid to step out your comfort zone and always be open to learn. Persist in honing your craft, surround yourself with supportive people from the industry, and believe in yourself. Keep pushing boundaries and break the stereotypes– the barber chair is yours too. You’ve got this!

Chaps Managing Partner Jordan Davies says “As we commemorate International Women’s Day, we’re not only acknowledging the global movement but also taking a moment to recognize the incredible women who play pivotal roles in shaping our business. In a predominantly male-dominated environment, their contributions stand out, not just for their skills and expertise, but for the unique balance they bring to our workplace. (Where would we be without them?)

From the customer service to the back of house, our female team members play crucial roles across every aspect of our business. Whether it’s in barbers, therapists, marketing, finance, customer service, or HR, their skills, expertise, and passion drive our success forward each day. Today, we want to shine a spotlight on the remarkable women in our Business. Thank you, Ladies!”
