Issy, one of Chaps & Co’s very own barbers has recently returned to the Middle East after a year-long stint in New York City.

Issy grew up in the South of England before moving to Dubai during the pandemic and has been part of the Chaps & Co family for three years now. She has been barbering since 2016, but has worked in the hair industry since 2008, working for a number of high end salons such as L’Oreal, Wella and Toni & Guy.

During her time in the Big Apple, Issy has been working with our US team, using her experience in the industry to help them establish the Chaps name in the city. As she rejoins our branches in Dubai, we wanted to sit down and take a minute to discuss her experience in New York.

Q: What did you like about your experience in New York?

A: New York City is truly an exceptional place. It’s a bustling, dynamic, creative, and liberal city that is constantly brimming with high energy, excitement, and life.

The city’s history is fascinating, and there’s always something new to discover whether it’s the architecture, museums, or vibrant neighbourhoods that make New York unique.

Q: What was your favourite thing about the city?

A: One of my favourite things about the city is the social scene. People interact and connect like it’s the 90s, without the constant distraction of smartphones. It’s amazing to see how easily New Yorkers interact with one another, and how friendly and welcoming they can be to visitors.

Q: What do your colleagues see as your best attribute at Chaps?

A: After asking a few colleagues, I’m best known for being eccentric! I have a loud personality and can talk for the entire day, which means my last client will get the same energy as my first. I pride myself on being organised, punctual and having attention to detail, which I feel fits in with the Chaps brand, standards and values.

Q: What advice do you have for young barbers who may be considering leaving their hometown or even moving countries like you?

A: Do it! Leaving my hometown opened many doors for my career, further than I thought possible for a barber. I’ve learnt from some amazing barbers and I’ve been able to travel. As long as you have the confidence and ability to adapt, it will be the best decision you ever make.

Q: What are you most excited about now you’re back in Dubai?

A: I’m really excited to be back in Dubai and to continue my career with Chaps & Co. I have some great plans in the pipeline, including launching my own line of barbering products and opening my own barbershop.

I’m also looking forward to continuing to learn and grow, and to sharing my knowledge with other barbers. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Chaps family, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.

Exciting times ahead…

We’re really proud to have had Issy as a member of the team here at Chaps for the last three years and we couldn’t be more proud of the job she’s done in New York. We can’t wait to watch her continue her journey back in Dubai!
