As he prepares to embark on a new chapter of his life in Saudi Arabia, we wanted to take a moment to sit with him and reflect on his journey so far. From a young age, Zuhair knew that he wanted to work with hair. He was drawn to the idea of creating unique looks and helping people feel confident in their appearance. With this in mind, he started working as a barber when he was just a teenager, and he hasn’t looked back since.
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
A: I have just over eight years of experience working as a full time barber. I used to work part time at my grandfathers’ barber shop whilst working in corporate during the day, nine until six as an auditor.
My family wanted me to have that certificate and be well educated. I don’t regret that as working in the corporate world allowed me to understand a client’s needs at Chaps.
Q: Where did you grow up?
A: I grew up in Damascus, Syria, that’s where I started my journey. I started working there as a barber before moving to Egypt and Singapore. Then I worked in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia before coming to Dubai.
I’ve spent three years in Dubai, I’ve worked in the Dubai Design District branch and now I’m in the process of moving to Saudi Arabia.
Q: Why are you moving to Saudi Arabia?
A: Soon I’ll call Saudi Arabia home. We have very exciting news. We have I believe two branches opening up before the end of this year. My role will be Senior Barber.
I also do content creation for the company as well as being part of the training and development team. I kept educating myself when it came to barbering. Everyday I study, I go through different platforms of education and because I keep up to date with all of the trends, I think that’s what gave me the opportunity to be in this role.
Q: You specialise in hipster beards and stubble beards, tell us more about that?
A: I love beards, I love wearing them myself and I love shaping and sculpting them myself for my clients. I’ve had a beard for the last 12 years, I used to shave it every year down to the blade with a razor to refresh and as part of the Movember movement as we (Chaps & Co) are a big supporter of this but it’s been three years since I’ve shaved it as my wife doesn’t allow me to!
I think it’s a great topic to talk about when clients sit in my chair. They’ll say to me ‘long beard, how long have you been growing it? What products do you think are best and what kind of routine do you follow to take care of your beard?’.
